      <image:title>Stories - TB in Indonesia</image:title>
<image:caption>Tuberculosis is one of the top four causes of death in Indonesia, claiming the lives of an estimated 100,000 people each year. The country has the second highest burden of the disease in the world and new strains have emerged in recent years that are resistant to existing treatment (known as Drug Resistant TB or DR-TB). DR-TB causes immense hardship for patients and poses a significant challenge to health workers. The Sustainable Development Goals have set a target (SDG 3.3) to end the epidemic of TB and other communicable diseases by 2030. (Stock photo assignment for UNDP Indonesia. <image:caption>Emmy Hafild co-founded Indonesia’s most prominent environmental NGO in the 1990s. Today she’s an adviser to a private company building a hydropower dam along the Batang Toru river ecosystem on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, which relies on coal to produce most of its electricity. Ms. Hafild accepts that there is a trade-off between producing hydropower and the disruption of the surrounding ecosystem, but argues that this project is necessary to help Indonesia hit its target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. “Climate change is real,” she says. “At this time, we cannot ... [see things in] black and white.” Her support for the project has made her unpopular among Indonesian environmentalists. An international campaign to stop the dam, which is being built by Chinese engineers, has focused on the plight of a rare and endangered orangutan species that lives in the region. The project has been delayed but is due for completion by 2025. Indonesia is not the only country wrestling with this dilemma. In most developing countries, electricity holds the key to economic growth and industrialization. To produce clean energy may require making hard choices about hydropower projects that impact the environment. <image:caption>Nature’s bounty has long sustained life on Ambon, an island in eastern Indonesia that was fought over by 17th-century European spice traders. In the village of Asilulu, the richest bounty was found at sea, where most residents made a living from catching tuna. That is, until a rapidly warming ocean slashed the daily catch. As tuna migrated to cooler waters, fishermen faced longer journeys to catch them. When they tried to adapt, their business model couldn’t keep up, and today most have abandoned their traditional livelihood. Some have switched to coral reef fishing. Others have turned their backs on the sea. Their challenge is emblematic of the increasingly tough choices faced by many communities that depend on fish stocks and other natural resources that are being disrupted by climate change. From their perspective, it is the richer industrialized countries whose greenhouse gas emissions have led the planet down a perilous path from which there is no respite. Climate change is ... a cumulative result of global human activities,” says Aminuddin Mane Kandari, an Indonesian environmental scientist. “But the ones who first face the impacts are vulnerable communities.” (Assignment for International Women’s Media Foundation and The Christian Science Monitor: When climate adaptation fails, who is responsible? Indonesia is asking.)</image:caption>

Funding comes from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund, and UNDP. The first stage ran for 25 days, and involved 300 villagers who were hired to clear debris from quake-stricken homes and schools. They also worked on community improvement projects such as road repair. The second phase kicks off in January and it will be much bigger, involving at least 3,200 villagers – of which 40 percent are women -- in several districts. It'll run for three months. <image:caption>Indonesians are still living with the consequences of the pell-mell conversion of carbon-rich peat forests on Borneo island for rice cultivation in the 1990s. It led to recurrent forest fires that spew poisonous haze into the atmosphere. Now the parched peatland is being sized up for another ambitious project to produce rice and other crops. President Joko Widodo says Indonesia needs to be more self-sufficient in food production and wants to convert vast tracts of land on Borneo and the island of Sumatra, a combined area larger than Connecticut. At a site in Central Kalimantan, farmers are planting new rice variants that are supposed to produce higher yields. So far, not all farmers have seen the benefits, and critics say the peatland project is ill-conceived. Safrudin Mahendra, an environmental campaigner, asks, "If it fails on the showcase site, what will happen in other areas that have never been used since the 1990s?” (Assignment for International Women’s Media Foundation and The Christian Science Monitor: Why Indonesia’s rice paddy expansion is raising climate concerns)</image:caption>

<image:caption>Isn’t This Home? is a photo book that I published with Gueari Galeri. The project explores the search for a sense of belonging whilst living abroad for postgraduate studies (London, The UK) and is met with unexpected circumstances such as COVID-19 lockdown, national strike, and other socio-political issues. I’m trying to capture the struggle to find my sense of belonging in London, the heart of imperialism, as someone from a (previously, or even still) colonised place – without having to participate in the glamorisation of the white and the west as well as trying my best not to portray London from an overtly-romanticised tourist gaze. I eventually found “home” in the presence of my friends, visual experiences that are familiar to me and my origin, and my aloneness under lockdown. I used analog photography partly to highlight the fact that I only had one chance to “make things right” when I was there, and also to get that exposed/burnt effect on my photographs that can perfectly illustrate the displacement that I felt there. The gloomy and empty atmosphere present in the photographs were intentionally created to shatter the tourist gaze and give another perspective on the often-glamorised life of Indonesian students overseas. I want to share the feelings of emptiness and the bitter realisations of having to find home and sense of belonging in one of the loneliest cities in the world. This work is also slightly influenced by my post-colonial and cultural studies reading list, one of the most influential ones is All That is Solid Melts Into Air by Marshall Berman, which explores the experience of modernity.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Written and photographed by Fieni Aprilia “Junaidi, 42, poses with his PVC cannon in front of his farm in Alue Buloh. He crafted the device using a pipe and lights it with methylated spirit to alert the village whenever a wild elephant comes near. Image by Fieni Aprilia for Mongabay.” Nestled between a vast palm oil plantation and the Sumatran rainforest is Alue Buloh, a hamlet in Cot Girek village, North Aceh district. To reach it, one must hike several kilometres down a mud and gravel road lined by land clearings and abandoned huts. The residents of Alue Buloh seem to never run out of stories about their interactions and encounters with elephants. The hamlet is frequented by three herds, consisting of seven, 10 and 15 elephants, respectively. “We can only accept our fate when the elephants ravage our crops,” said Junaidi, a 42-year-old farmer who lives in Alue Buloh. “The elephants will never forget their original route. So, if we build a house or a farm within the elephants’ corridor, the elephants will take over.” Instead of killing or hurting the elephants for invading their farms, the farmers provide them with space to feed and chase them away gently using loud noises — and in some cases, by talking to them. Even as increasing habitat loss for the Sumatran elephant and poverty for the villagers complicate efforts to address the human-elephant conflicts, local farmers are still exhaustively conducting voluntary patrols to protect the elephants and save their livelihoods. These are the people living among the Sumatran elephants and working to conserve them along with the livelihoods of Cot Girek. <image:caption>In 1850s, a naturalist from England named Alfred Russel Wallace explored one of the big islands in Indonesia, Sulawesi. The largest island in the “Wallacea” region is home to one of the largest marine biodiversity areas, with over 700 different species of coral and fish, and where Australian marsupials and Asian monkeys living next to one another. Nestled in the northern part of the island is Manado, where Tangkoko Nature Reserve located. Spanned for around 8700 hectares of forested area comprised of hills and valleys, Tangkoko calls many endemic animal species and unusual plants as its inhabitants. Black crested macaques, tarsiers, Sulawesi bear cuscus, and hornbills are some of them. Black crested macaque or locally known as yaki is a critically endangered species according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. These black macaques are considered a local delicacy and hunted at an unsustainable rate. Thus, the main threats for yaki are poaching, illegal encroachment, and forest fires; but poaching remains the biggest concern. There are currently two main groups of yaki, known as Rambo 1 and Rambo 2, and they’re hoping that there will be more Rambos in the upcoming years. (I read from an online source that there are actually 4 Rambos, but the field officer told me that there are only 2 Rambos. So, the value is up for updates) Assignment for UNDP Indonesia</image:caption>

These include the booming population and industry expansion encroaching on the tigers’ habitat. The second most common cause is illegal poaching. Tigers are hunted for their fur, teeth, and body parts, traded for traditional medicine, amulet, magic, and souvenirs. According to the report Burning Bright: UNDP and GEF in the Tiger Landscape, tigers are top predator. They balance the food chain by controlling populations of species, preventing any one species from dominating the habitat. <image:caption>Hari Janu Nurdiansyah, known as Janu, is a 31-year-old nurse working in a public hospital in the Cibinong area of Bogor, Indonesia. He is also a freelance photographer, videographer, and video editor. Janu's experience with smoking began when his older friends introduced him to smoking at elementary school. As he progressed to junior high school in Sukabumi, the influence of these friends became more significant as smoking became a daily habit for them. Janu's smoking habits reached their peak when he worked at a radio station in Bandung. Pressures associated with his work led him to smoke more, sometimes consuming up to two packs a day. He started with milder brands but eventually transitioned to high-nicotine cigarettes, further exacerbating his addiction. Janu then pursued a career in health and became a nurse in 2017. As a healthcare professional, Janu regularly interacts with pediatric doctors and parents. He learned that smoking parents were a major factor contributing to severe respiratory issues in their children, such as bronchopneumonia requiring admission to the intensive care unit (ICU). Witnessing these cases prompted Janu to consider quitting smoking. He did not want to jeopardise his wife's health or see his children suffer because of his smoking. Motivated by these considerations, Janu gradually reduced his smoking habits until he finally quit altogether. With the money he once spent on cigarettes, he now invests in his family's well-being by purchasing healthier food choices. By redirecting his earnings towards wholesome groceries, Janu ensures that his family receives nourishment that supports their physical and mental well-being. <image:caption>Tuhar, a 55-year-old farmer from Central Java, has embarked on an intriguing journey in the farming business for the past 23 years. In 2000, he made a bold decision to transition from cultivating tobacco to growing food crops and coffee. This change reflects the evolving perspectives and practices in farming within his region. Tobacco farming has played a significant role in the cultural and agrarian history of the area. However, tobacco’s unfavorable prices and detrimental impact on the environment led some farmers to pivot to other crops. Tuhar, formerly an active tobacco farmer who served as the chairman of the Indonesian Association of Tobacco Farmers (APTI) in Kledung District, Temanggung, is among the tobacco farmers who transitioned to horticulture farming. Throughout his 23-year journey, Tuhar has continuously adapted to challenges and honed his expertise in the agricultural field. His decision to transition from tobacco to horticulture farming demonstrates courage and a desire to create a more sustainable and diverse farming approach. <image:caption>In South Tangerang city, 36-year-old Fitri juggles life as a freelance worker, wife and mother of four children, while caring for her husband, Anggun, who is undergoing treatment for tuberculosis (TB). When over-the-counter medicine failed to relieve Anggun’s respiratory symptoms, Fitri convinced him to visit the local primary health care centre (puskesmas). There, Anggun was diagnosed with TB, sending Fitri’s mind racing. "I was worried about myself and my children catching it," she recalls. Fortunately, Fitri quickly learned that she and her children could access TB preventive treatment (TPT), a crucial measure for protecting both individuals and the wider community from the disease. Since 2012, Indonesia has implemented a national TPT programme, which initially targeted people living with HIV. However, in alignment with WHO guidance, the programme has since expanded to include all household contacts of bacteriologically confirmed TB patients, like Fitri and her children. As the primary caregiver, Fitri ensures Anggun takes his medication, while also following a preventive drug regimen for the rest of the family, with ongoing support from TB programme and puskesmas staff. <image:caption>INDONESIA: WORLD OF TREASURES is photography book focusing on the nature and the culture of Indonesia from Merauke to Sabang. Captured by a photographer named Vebri Adrian, the book contained more that one thousand photos. I tried to make the layout as simple and as enjoyable since the book has about 530 pages of photos with a few body text. The book was independently published in 2014. These are the photos of the final dummy of the book before the title change</image:caption>

      <image:title>UNDP Indonesia: Social Good Summit</image:title>
<image:caption>During my time with United Nations Development Programme Indonesia, I creative directed the “Social Good Summit – Our City: Live, Work, Play” in 2018. I led the conception and the design production of both large scale events. Initially, I researched UNDP’s target audience for both events and wrote presentations and proposals of how the visual design that will complement both events would be. Then, I had to create several creative directions and design alternatives that would perfectly fit the theme of each event. Prior to working on this event, I did audience research, design style research, and the curation of visual elements. Since it was a large scale event, I had to make the campaign more visually appealing to gather interest from more people. The design trend that was popular amongst the youth in Indonesia at that time was colour clashing, contrasting neon colours and dark backgrounds. Since the event concentrated on the issue of city and livelihood, I used street photography as the main visual event of the art direction. I curated and used street photos from UNDP’s field assignments all over Indonesia that fit the urban theme and combine them with a distinct colour palette. To spread the campaign, I designed a street photography competition on social media prior to the event and the competition alone resulted in at least 300 new followers on their social media. Then, I translated the design into other collaterals and props for the event – one of them was placing the bright coloured blocks of SDGs icons on stage, in front of a dark background, and under the spotlight. Giving the overall look similar to the digital campaigns that I designed for the event. The visual-heavy event resulted in positive coverage on national news outlets, and 700 new youth followers on UNDP Indonesia’s social media within a day.</image:caption>

Then, I had to create several creative directions and design alternatives that would perfectly fit the theme of each event. The challenge was assuring the other team members to agree on the rather experimental (design) approach to the event. For the first event, World Environment Day, I researched and reached out to some local digital zines to see what kind of visual designs are used by youth-led environmental events. Then, I carefully curated the design styles to fit UNDP Indonesia’s branding guidelines and current design needs. I found the common ground amongst the team member to be an “environmental campaign for young people”. Then, I used the DIY collage design style, which was trending at that time amongst youth, and adapt that to fit both the event’s concept and UNDP’s branding. I also included other visual elements in the event such as photography exhibition, artistic venue (Jakarta Creative Hub), mural design to complement the event, etc. The event resulted in positive coverage on at least 21 national news outlets and over 400 new followers on UNDP Indonesia’s social media within a day.</image:caption>

      <image:title>UNDP Indonesia: SDG Talks</image:title>
<image:caption>During my time at UNDP Indonesia, I initiated SDG Talks, a monthly public discussion that campaigns the Agenda 2030 as well as Indonesia’s progress in achieving it. The discussion invites a wide range of people from indigenous leaders, actors, artists, to people from the ministry. SDG Talks is still up and running until the present day. I consider this monthly event as my legacy before I left UNDP Indonesia to continue my postgraduate studies. I led the design conceptions for every event using the SDG icons colours as the main visual component depending on the topic. I conceived the master design and supervised the other graphic designers to create the complementary designs.</image:caption>

Indragiri Hulu, Riau Province, immediately reported to the local government. This report is immediately followed up at the district, provincial and national levels. So that in less than two months since the first case was reported, the vaccine could be distributed in 8 districts/cities in Riau province in mid-March. The collaboration between the community and the government for #SegeraLapor has been proven to accelerate animal disease control.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As a visual design consultant, I provide support for the conception and development of social media materials and printed campaigns for the Lumpy Skin Disease Outbreak Response. I am responsible for creating several campaign materials directed to a variety of audiences from FAO’s general followers on social media to local farmers in remote areas in Indonesia. These posters and banners were designed to be disseminated in rural Indonesia with local farmers as the target audience. The readability must be high and the designs must be attractive to the preferences of the audience.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Marrakesh Treaty: Opening Barriers for Persons with Print Disabilities in Indonesia UNDP released its second issue brief for the ratification of the Marrakesh Treaty that aims to facilitate access to published works for people with print disabilities by creating a legal framework to allow the creation, distribution, and cross-border exchange of accessible formats. This issue brief encompasses the ratification options, coherence between laws and policies and policy opportunities in Indonesia to implement the treaty. Moreover, it outlines the relevant stakeholders that play a significant role in its ratification process. The design was inspired by the use of braile. The colour palette was used to comply with UNDP Indonesia’s brand guidelines.</image:caption>

      <image:title>UNDP Indonesia: Issue Brief</image:title>
<image:caption>Ending poverty and inequality are some of today’s greatest challenges that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to overcome. Giving by different religions plays an important contribution to financing those Goals. Zakat, as an obligatory payment for all Muslims earning above a certain threshold, is one of the world's largest forms of wealth transfer to the poor. It is also perhaps the most overlooked by development organisations despite its tremendous potential. This report discusses the overlap between the purpose of zakat and the global goals and the important role zakat can play in achieving them. The brief was disseminated to stakeholders and UNDP’s general audience. The design had to be easy to read and understand, and attractive enough to gain more interest from people. The colour green was used to comply with the common understanding that green is considered an ‘Islamic colour’ in Indonesia.</image:caption>
